چکیده

Technology (1954) under the constant encouragement of Professor George J. Yevick (1954). The part concerning cosmology was largely developed at the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa (1956). The author would like to express his appreciation to Professor Philip M. Morse of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to Dr. G. Herzberg and Dr. T.-Y. Wu of the National Research Council of Canada for the support and much-needed encouragement of this work in its earlier stages. Warm gratitute is especially due to Dr. L. S. Sheingold, Dr. J. T. Thomas, and Mr. A. S. Gutman of Sylvania without whose continued support and encouragement the investigation could not have been carried to its present stage. The author wishes to thank S.Schneider for many valuable suggestions and illuminating discussions.

The fermion sign problem is studied in the path integral formalism. The standard picture of Fermi liquids is first critically analyzed, pointing out some of its rather peculiar properties. The insightful work of Ceperley in constructing fermionic path integrals in terms of constrained world-lines is then reviewed. In this representation, the minus signs associated with Fermi-Dirac statistics a...

Measurement of Sound Velocity in a Fermi Gas near a Feshbach Resonance

Sound waves are excited in an optically trapped degenerate Fermi gas of spin-up and spin-down atoms with magnetically tunable interactions. Measurements are made throughout the crossover region, from a weakly interacting Fermi gas through the resonant Fermi superfluid regime to a Bose condensate of dimer molecules. The measured sound velocities test theories of hydrodynamic wave propagation and...

Quantum criticality of a Fermi gas with a spherical dispersion minimum.

We describe the quantum phase transition of a Fermi gas occurring when the quasiparticle excitation energy has a minimum in momentum space which crosses zero on a sphere of radius k(0) not equal 0. The quasiparticles have a universal interaction which controls the physical properties in the vicinity of the quantum-critical point. We discuss possible applications to fermionic superfluids formed ...

Strongly interacting Fermi gases

Measurements have confirmed a theoretical prediction published in 2006: all strongly interacting Fermi gases were predicted to show identical thermodynamic behaviour. Late in 2006, detailed experimental data became available for the first time, for different fermions under different conditions. All the new data lies on a single universal curve, exactly as we predicted. This is an outstanding di...

Universal Fermi gases in mixed dimensions.

We investigate a two-species Fermi gas in which one species is confined in a two-dimensional plane (2D) or one-dimensional line (1D) while the other is free in the three-dimensional space (3D). We discuss the realization of such a system with the interspecies interaction tuned to resonance. When the mass ratio is in the range 0.0351<m_(2D)/m_(3D)<6.35 for the 2D-3D mixture or 0.006 46<m_(1D)/m_...
